The origin of the word mosque
The Origin of the Word “ Mosque ” – A New Perspective Many people search for the origin of the word mosque. Some say it is a mere distortion of the Arabic word masjid into mosque, while others – more radical in their views – claim it was derived from mosquito to insult Islam. But the matter is simpler than that. Muslims, when praying, stand in straight rows. In the early days, when their numbers were small, they would designate a place to gather and align for prayer. Thus, worship was associated with lining up. Muslims = the believers in Islam. Queue = a row or line. English often tends to shorten expressions, so the phrase Muslims Queue (the line of Muslims) was used for that place. Over time, it was shortened into Masque. Eventually, through natural linguistic change, it became the familiar word: Mosque. So, in its origin, the mosque signifies: the place where Muslims line up to worship their Lord . 🖋️ Prepared by: Ismail Omar Al-Ramli – Benghazi, Libya
